Stonehenge

We decided that we would travel back to London from Nottingham via Stonehenge. Yes a bit of a detour, but well worth it. Once you can get on a motorway in England, the drive is generally easy and fast, so a comfortable 3 hours to Stonehenge.

The last couple of K's to Stonehenge, there was considerable traffic build up as the Motorway reverted into a single lane, this allowed us to view Stonehenge from a distance for several minutes.

The facility is well laid out, with a free audio guide, after paying the £6.60 entry fee, that tells you about the important features and historical facts, as well some of the speculation eg used by druids, it wasn't. We also had an audio guide at Wimbledon Tennis museum, and I think that this is an excellent idea. You get all the facts, plus additional remarks if you are interested, recorded by professionals that tell the story in detail and at the pace you want, much better that a tour guide.

Stonehenge is a magnificent sight from a distance, and just starts to loom larger the closer you get - quite fantastic. It is amazing to think that after several thousand years the majority of this site is still in place. Yes there has been some removed to be used elsewhere (why anyone would have condoned this is beyond me), some taken as "samples" by visitors chipping pieces off the stones that make up Stonehenge.

The detour was well worth it, and getting back to London turned out to be a non issue, as we were warned that today (Friday) is the busiest day as it is a term break and so many Londoner's would be on the road. Turns out everyone was leaving, and the traffic heading into London was not too bad.

Sadly, we are getting very close to the end of our trip, but are having a bloody good time
